Ruger Vaquero 45 Colt Stainless Single-Action Revolver

The 6-round cylinder single-action Ruger Vaquero revolvers are chambered in 357 Mag, 45 Colt, 9mm and 44 Rem Mag. Barrels range from 3.75” to 5.50”. There are various options falling into four groups: Blued, Stainless, Bisley and SASS totaling over 25 Vaquero models.

Vaqueros, Spanish for “cowboy”, have compelling common features. They’re all six-shooters with traditional Wild West style that includes extended length grips, front blade sights and integral notch rear sights.

All feature transfer bar safeties and loading gate interlocks. A transfer bar safety means the hammer can’t fire the gun unless the trigger is pulled. So even if you drop a loaded revolver, it’s not supposed to fire. But there’s more: a loading gate interlock also helps prevent accidentally firing your gun.

Vaqueros have ultra-accurate cold hammer forged barrels with 1:16” RH twists. Barrels come in 3.75”, 4.62” and 5.50” lengths. Generally speaking, the 3.75” barrel’s corresponding dimensions are 9.00” overall and 37 ounces. The 4.62” barrel guns are 10.25″ long overall and weigh 43 ounces. The big guns here are the 5.50” barreled versions. They measure 11.12″ overall and weigh 44 ounces. There are some weight variances depending on grips, etc.

The Blued guns come with blued alloy steel frames. Some have nice looking flared hardwood grips while others have crescent-shaped Birdshead black laminate grips. Blued Vaquero revolvers are chambered for 357 Mag and 45 Colt in 3.75”, 4.62” and 5.50” barrels. One 357 also comes with an extra 9mm Luger Cylinder. This gun is also an outlier by having an 8-groove barrel.

The Stainless group has resplendent high-gloss finished stainless steel frames. These too have hardwood and Birdshead black laminate grip choices. There are various combinations of 357 Mag and 45 Colt in 3.75”, 4.62” and 5.50” barrels. There is also a solitary 44 Rem Mag with a 3.75” model.

Then there are two Bisley models. They also have the beautiful high-gloss finished stainless steel frames and Bisley hammers. But instead of hardwood or Birdshead grips, they have really impressive simulated ivory grips. Both models have 5.50” barrels. One is 357 Mag while the other is 45 Colt.

Finally, we have the SASS models. SASS stands for the very famous Single Action Shooting Society. Only Bisley-frame guns qualify for their competitions. The SASS revolvers have high-gloss finished stainless steel frames, Montado-style hammers and ruger 9E 9mm black. Each SASS model actually comes with two matching revolvers. You can get either a pair of 357 Mag with the 4.62” length barrels or a pair of 45 Colts with 5.50” barrels. Pew, pew indeed.
